Looking for a Stay alternative on a Mac in 2026

You used Stay for years, or an old thread recommended it, and now you want to know what is current. Maybe you are tired of storing windows again each time your desk changes. This page says where Stay stands today, why the problem exists at all, what you can do with no app, and what the other tools do according to their own sites. I make one of those tools, Many Displays, so read that part with that in mind.

Where Stay stands today

Stay is still available, and older posts that give a price are out of date. On the Mac App Store it is now free, and the release note for version 1.5.1, dated August 2025, reads "Stay is now freeware". It requires macOS 14.6 or later.

It works by storing. You move your windows where you want them and have Stay store them, and it keeps one set for each combination of displays: one with the external monitor connected, one without. You can restore a set at any time, and it can be configured to restore automatically as displays connect and disconnect.

If that matches how you work, there is no need to replace it. People usually start looking when their layout changes often, so the stored set is out of date, or when they want every desktop covered.

Why macOS needs any of this

Fixes without an app

They cost nothing, so try them first. The full list is in every fix for windows moving after sleep.

For sleep, lid close and docks, something has to put the windows back.

What the other apps do

These descriptions and prices come from each app's own site or App Store listing, checked on 4 November 2026. They can change, so confirm before buying. I have not tested these apps for this page.

Four questions to choose by

  1. Do you want a fixed layout, or the one you had a minute ago? Saved layouts suit a desk that rarely changes, or switching between tasks. If you rearrange during the day, a tool that saves as you work avoids storing again.
  2. When does it stop saving? A tool that saves on a timer can record the pile macOS just made.
  3. Are your monitors identical? Check whether the tool says how it tells them apart.
  4. Which macOS and Mac are you on? Stay needs macOS 14.6, Putback and Workflo macOS 14, and Snapset macOS 14 on Apple silicon.

One limit applies to all of them. Since macOS 14.5 no app can move another app's window to a different desktop (Space) without disabling System Integrity Protection. More in desktops move to the wrong monitor after lock.

How Many Displays handles it

The main difference from Stay is that there is nothing to store. Many Displays saves within about 1.5 seconds of a window moving, and it freezes saving the moment the Mac locks, sleeps or a display disconnects, so the mess is never recorded. It keeps one layout per combination of displays. When the Mac wakes or unlocks, or you log in or plug the monitors back in, it waits until the displays are stable, puts back the arrangement, resolution, rotation and HDR, and returns every window to its display, position and size. Windows on your other desktops are remembered and restored too, without switching to them.

Identical monitors are told apart by system UUID, then physical port on Apple silicon, then manufacture date, and only then position. Behind one dock two monitors usually share the Mac's port, so the port cannot separate them. Monitors bought at different times are told apart by date. Two identical ones from the same batch behind one dock are the hardest case.

Where it may not suit you:

It needs macOS 13 or later and the Accessibility permission, and runs on Apple silicon and Intel. The trial lasts 14 days with no account and no card. While you try it, turn off automatic restore in any other tool, so two apps are not moving the same windows.

Questions

Is Stay still available, and is it free?

Yes. Stay is on the Mac App Store as a free download. Its release note for version 1.5.1 says "Stay is now freeware", and it requires macOS 14.6 or later.

Which Stay alternative does not need a saved layout?

Putback and Many Displays both describe saving as you work instead of asking you to store a layout first. Workflo describes windows returning when the displays change. Display Maid, Moom and Snapset are built around layouts you save.

Can any alternative move windows back to the right desktop (Space)?

Since macOS 14.5 no app can move another app's window to a different Space without disabling System Integrity Protection. A tool can restore a window's display, position and size. Turning off "Displays have separate Spaces" keeps sleep from changing a window's Space in practice.

Can I try another app while Stay is installed?

Yes, but turn off automatic restore in one of them first. Two tools moving the same windows after a wake make it hard to tell which one did what.
